Mackenzie “Mack” Horton rose up through the junior ranks of swimming with some impressive performances. In 2013 he came home with 5 Gold Medals and 5 Championship Records from the 2013 World Junior Championships in Dubai. He took out the 200m, 400m, 800m and 1500m Freestyle events, as well as anchoring the boys 4 x 100m Freestyle Relay team to victory. 2014 was another strong year for Mack, he broke 3 Junior World records in the 200m and 400m and 1500m Freestyle as well as winning a Silver medal at his first Commonwealth Games in the 1500m freestyle.

In 2016, at 20 years of age, Mack competed in his first Olympic Games in Rio de Janerio having qualified for the 400m Freestyle as well as his pet event the 1500m Freestyle. On the first night of competition Mack qualified 2nd fastest for the 400m Final and in a hard fought race against one of his great rivals, Sun Yang of China, Mack touched the wall in First place and won Australia their first individual Gold of the Games.

Hailing from Melbourne, Mack began competitive swimming at the age of 10 after overcoming an early fear of water. Mack soon began to show his true potential in the pool and it was this potential that was noticed by the coaching staff at Melbourne Vicentre, where he soon graduated into the senior squads. Mack broke his first Australian Age Record at the age of 13, and has continued to etch his name into the record books for each subsequent year, with the 1500m Freestyle emerging as his pet event along the journey.
